Texas LVN Continuing Nursing Education Requirements

LVN Learning Institute is a California BVNPT-approved continuing education provider. The Texas Board of Nursing recognizes continuing nursing education approved by recognized credentialing agencies and providers, including other state boards of nursing.

Texas LVNs must meet continuing competency requirements during each two-year licensing period. Nurses may satisfy the general requirement by:

✓ Completing 20 contact hours of continuing nursing education (CNE) in the nurse's area of practice; OR

✓ Achieving, maintaining, or renewing a Texas Board-approved national nursing certification in the nurse's area of practice.   

Additional Texas Requirement — Nursing Jurisprudence & Ethics

All Texas nurses must complete at least 2 contact hours of Nursing Jurisprudence and Nursing Ethics before the end of every third two-year licensing period — essentially once during each three-renewal-cycle period. These 2 hours count toward the 20 contact hours rather than being 2 additional hours on top of the 20.

The Texas Board of Nursing recognizes CNE approved by specified credentialing agencies and providers, including other state boards of nursing.  

Because LVN Learning Institute is an approved continuing education provider through the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT), our applicable nursing continuing education courses fall within Texas BON's recognized provider pathway for CNE approved through another state board of nursing.

Courses used for Texas renewal should be relevant to the nurse's area of practice, and nurses remain responsible for completing any targeted Texas continuing education requirements that apply to them.
