Human Trafficking Training Requirement 

Texas nurses who provide direct patient care must complete an HHSC-approved Human Trafficking Prevention Course each renewal period.

The FREE HEART (Hearing, Evaluating, Activating, Resourcing and Training) course is available through the Texas Health and Human Services Learning Portal and provides 1.5 nursing contact hours that may count toward the 20-hour renewal requirement while fulfilling the human trafficking training mandate.

Texas Nursing Jurisprudence and Ethics Requirement

The Texas Board of Nursing requires all Texas LVNs and RNs to complete 2 contact hours of Nursing Jurisprudence and Ethics every third two-year licensing period (approximately every six years).

These hours may count toward the standard 20-hour continuing education requirement.

Nurses should verify when this training is due based on their individual license renewal cycle.
