Nebraska LPN Continuing Education Requirements

Nebraska recognizes nursing continuing education offered by approved providers of nursing continuing education. The Nebraska Board of Nursing identifies state boards of nursing as one example of an accrediting body for nursing continuing education.

Nebraska LPN licenses expire on October 31 of each odd-numbered year.

To renew an active license, Nebraska LPNs must meet one of the state's continued competency requirements or qualify for an applicable waiver.

One of the primary renewal options requires an LPN to:

✓ Have practiced nursing for at least 500 hours during the previous five years; AND

✓ Complete at least 20 contact hours of nursing continuing education from an approved provider during the previous two years.

All 20 required contact hours may be completed through home study or online courses.

Nebraska also provides other continued competency options, including recent nursing program graduation, completion of an approved refresher course, qualifying nursing specialty certification, or development and maintenance of a professional continuing competency portfolio.
